Seven Lakes (Haft Kul) Day Tour to Tajikistan

The most-asked-for day trip from Samarkand crosses into Tajikistan. After the Jartepa–Sarazm crossing used on our tours, the road passes Panjakent (Penjikent) and climbs into the Fann Mountains to the Seven Lakes, a chain of mountain lakes whose colours change from one lake to the next. Many nationalities can visit Tajikistan visa-free or with an e-visa — check the current rules for your passport on the official e-visa portal before you book. Shakhrisabz Day Tour

Shakhrisabz is the birthplace of Amir Timur and its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The road crosses the Takhtakaracha Pass, with mountain views on the way. In town you see the ruins of the Ak-Saray Palace and the Dorus Saodat and Dorut Tilovat complexes. The Shakhrisabz day tour takes about 6–7 hours and can be booked with a guide, as a group tour or with a driver only.

Langar-Ota and Shakhrisabz Day Tour

Bukhara Day Trip from Samarkand

Bukhara is close enough for a long day trip by the Afrosiyob high-speed train, which takes about 1.5 to 2 hours between the two cities. You spend the day walking the old centre — the Ark Fortress, the Kalyan Minaret, Lyabi-Hauz and the Samanid Mausoleum — and return in the evening. Imam Al-Bukhari Memorial Complex

The burial place of Imam al-Bukhari, the compiler of the most respected hadith collection in Sunni Islam, lies in the village of Khartang, about 25 km from Samarkand. It is one of the most important Islamic pilgrimage sites in the region and fits into half a day; ask us to add it to a private day out.

Hazrat Daud Cave

A pilgrimage site in the hills about 40 km from Samarkand, linked by local tradition to the Prophet David (Dawood). The climb to the cave is long and steep, so allow time and wear good shoes. See the Hazrat Daud Cave tour.

A crafts day: the Konigil workshop on the Siab River makes paper by hand with water mills, then the route continues to a silk carpet visit and the Chor Chinor site in Urgut. The Konigil, silk carpet and Urgut tour takes about 5–7 hours.

Nurata, Aydarkul Lake and a Yurt Camp

A long day to the north: the Chashma spring in Nurata, the fortress ruins above the town, then Aydarkul Lake and a yurt camp in the Kyzylkum Desert with camel riding. The one-day yurt camp and Aydarkul tour runs from March to October.

• Mountain roads are winding — take motion-sickness tablets if you need them.
• Dress modestly for shrines and mosques: shoulders and knees covered, a scarf for women.
