A Unique Day Trip Beyond the Border

Within a couple of hours the landscape changes from the tiled domes of Samarkand to the narrow gorges of the western Fann Mountains in Tajikistan. The goal of the trip is the chain of seven lakes in the Shing valley above Panjakent, linked by one mountain road.

What makes the day possible is distance: the border is close to Samarkand, and on our timeline you reach the first lake about an hour and a half after crossing it. What makes the day long is everything in between — two passport controls in each direction, a change of car and driver at the border, and a winding road that does not allow fast driving. Plan for a full day out, not a half-day excursion.

How the day runs: a realistic timeline

The timeline below is the one we use on our day tour. Times on the road and at the border vary with traffic, queues and the season, so treat them as a guide.

• 08:00 — pick-up at your hotel in Samarkand and drive to the border.
• 09:00 — border crossing; our team helps you through the procedures. On the Tajik side you meet your Tajik driver and guide.
• 10:00 — drive into the Fann Mountains along the river valley.
• 10:30 — the lakes: stops for sightseeing, short walks and photographs.
• 13:30 — traditional lunch at a local guesthouse or lakeside restaurant.
• 15:00 — short stop in Panjakent for sightseeing and orientation.
• 15:45 — photo stop at Sarazm, the UNESCO-listed archaeological site.
• 16:30 — drive back towards the border; around 17:30 border crossing and transfer to Samarkand.
• 18:30–19:00 — arrival at your hotel.

In practice, about three hours of the day are spent at the lakes and roughly one hour in Panjakent and Sarazm together. If you want more time for walking, for ancient Panjakent's ruins or simply for the drive in daylight, the two-day version with a night in a guesthouse is the better fit.

Crossing the border: documents and formalities

The tour uses the Jartepa–Sarazm crossing, which is called Jartepa on the Uzbek side and Sarazm on the Tajik side. You leave Uzbekistan through passport and customs control, cross to the Tajik post and pass passport and customs control again. On the way back the same happens in reverse.

Many nationalities can visit Tajikistan visa-free or with an e-visa — check the current rules for your passport on the official e-visa portal (evisa.tj) before you book. If you need an e-visa, apply in good time and carry a printed copy.

Coming back into Uzbekistan

You re-enter Uzbekistan the same evening. If your nationality enters Uzbekistan visa-free, check the current rules for your passport before you travel. If you travel on an Uzbek visa, it must allow a second entry — a single-entry visa is used up when you leave for Tajikistan.

At the checkpoint

Keep your passport and visa printouts in your hand luggage, not in the boot of the car. Queues are the main unknown of the day, which is one reason the tour starts at 08:00.

Haft Kul means "seven lakes" in Tajik. They lie one above the other along the Shing river, and the road climbs past all of them, so you see the lakes without a long hike. Each lake has its own colour, from turquoise to dark blue, depending on depth, light and minerals.

After Panjakent the road follows the valley into the mountains. It is paved at first and becomes a gravel track higher up, with narrow sections and bends above the water. In summer, parts of the track along the larger lakes can be flooded for short stretches. This is why the drive between the lakes takes time and why we use a local Tajik driver who knows the road.
