Stops Along the Way Teshiktosh – A fascinating natural rock formation. This site is known for its unique geological features and is often considered a must-see for travelers. It is a great place to take a short break and enjoy the fresh mountain air. The Highest Point of the Mountain – This location offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It is a perfect spot for photography, allowing you to capture the beauty of the mountains and valleys before continuing your journey.
Arrival in Shahrisabz Upon arrival, you will explore the historical and architectural wonders of this ancient city, which was once an important cultural and political center of the Timurid Empire.
Ak-Saray Palace This grand palace was built by Amir Temur in 1380 as a symbol of his power and ambition. The name “Ak-Saray” means “White Palace,” but it also conveys meanings of generosity and majesty. According to historical accounts, this palace was one of the most magnificent structures of its time, with entrance towers that reached a height of 50 meters. Today, only ruins remain, but they still reflect the grandeur and scale of Temur’s vision.
Dorus Saodat Complex Dorus Saodat, meaning “Repository of Power,” was constructed as a burial site for the ruling family. The complex included a prayer hall, a mosque, and accommodations for religious scholars and pilgrims. The main facade was decorated with exquisite white marble, and the tomb of Temur’s son, Jahangir, is considered a masterpiece of the period. This site highlights Temur’s desire to establish Shahrisabz as a spiritual and political center of his empire.
Dorut Tilavat Complex Located west of the Dorus Saodat complex, the Dorut Tilavat ensemble was built during the reign of Temur’s grandson, Ulugbek. It houses the tombs of Taraghay Bahadur (Temur’s father) and Sheikh Shamsiddin Kulol, Temur’s spiritual mentor. This religious site played a significant role in the spiritual development of the Timurid dynasty and is a remarkable example of Islamic architecture from that era.
Temur’s Secret Crypt Discovered in 1963, this underground crypt was believed to have been prepared as Temur’s final resting place. The room is simply designed, featuring inscriptions from the Quran on its arches. At the center of the crypt lies a large stone sarcophagus with inscriptions referring to Temur. Although Temur was ultimately buried in the Gur-e Amir Mausoleum in Samarkand, this crypt remains a mysterious and intriguing site for historians and visitors alike.
Shopping for Local Handicrafts Before leaving Shahrisabz, you may visit local shops that offer handmade suzanis (traditional embroidered textiles) and other Uzbek handicrafts. These souvenirs provide a perfect memory of your journey and a great way to support local artisans.
