This guide is about the alternative: going by road the long way round, over the mountains to Shakhrisabz and the Langar Ota shrine, and reaching Bukhara in the evening. Train or road: which suits you?

The train

Fast trains link Samarkand and Bukhara in about 1.5–2 hours, and there are several a day. You arrive with most of the day free for Bukhara. The train is the right choice if you are short of time, travel with a lot of luggage, or simply want a rest day between two busy cities. The road via the mountains

The direct road between the two cities runs across flat country. Our day tour does not take it: it heads south over the mountains to Shakhrisabz, then on to the village of Langar, and only then turns west towards Bukhara. You see the green foothills of Kashkadarya, a Timurid town and a Sufi shrine — places that otherwise need a separate day trip from Samarkand. The price is a long day in the car.

How the day runs

08:00 – leaving Samarkand

Pick-up in Samarkand and a drive of about two hours through the countryside and over the mountain pass. The road itself is part of the experience; our Kitob Pass travel guide describes it.

10:00 – Shakhrisabz

In Amir Timur's home town you visit the ruins of the Ak-Saray Palace, the Dorut Tilovat complex and the Chorsu bazaar. Lunch is at a local restaurant in Shakhrisabz around midday. We keep the monuments brief here; Day Tour to Shakhrisabz explains them in detail.

13:00 – Langar Ota

About an hour's drive brings you to Langar Ota, a Sufi shrine on a hillside above a mountain village, with a historic mosque. It is quiet and still a place of pilgrimage.

15:00 – the long drive to Bukhara

From Langar Ota the road descends to the plain and runs west to Bukhara, about 3.5 hours. Tell the driver whenever you need a break. Arrival in Bukhara at about 18:30, in time to check in and walk to Lyabi-Hauz for dinner.

Is it worth it?

It is worth it if Shakhrisabz and Langar Ota are on your wish list and you have no spare day for them. It is the wrong choice if you arrive in Samarkand tired, if you travel with small children who dislike long drives, or if you want daylight time in Bukhara on the same day. In those cases take the train and, if you can, see Shakhrisabz on a separate day trip from Samarkand.

Practical tips

• Settle your Samarkand hotel bill and pack the evening before, so the 08:00 start is easy.
• Keep a day bag with water, snacks, sun protection and a scarf in the cabin; the big luggage stays in the boot all day.
• Dress modestly: Langar Ota and Dorut Tilovat are active religious sites. Women should cover hair, shoulders and knees at the shrine.
• Bring cash in Uzbek som for lunch, drinks and donations.
• The mountain section has many bends; sit in front if you get car-sick.
• Book the first night in Bukhara close to the old town so you can walk out for dinner after the long drive.
