Rafting on the Ugam River is one of the most popular outdoor activities near Tashkent. The Ugam is a fast mountain river in the Tashkent region, close to the border with Kazakhstan, and a rafting day here combines clear water, rapids and mountain scenery with an easy drive from the capital. This guide explains the river, the season, who the trip suits and how to prepare.

Why Choose Rafting on the Ugam River?

The Ugam is the largest right-bank tributary of the Chirchiq River. It flows down from the Ugam Range through Kazakhstan and, for its last stretch, through Uzbekistan before joining the Chirchiq. In its lower course the river runs fast through a narrow valley with rocky banks, trees and mountain slopes on both sides.

For visitors, the Ugam has two big advantages. It is close to Tashkent, so you can raft and be back in the city the same evening. And the section used for the tour is suitable for first-timers as well as for people with some experience, so a mixed group can raft together.

River Conditions & Rafting Experience

The Ugam is fed by snow and rain in the mountains. Water levels are generally higher during the spring melt and lower later in the season, and they also change after heavy rain. Your instructors choose the route and decide on the day whether conditions are right.

How the day works

  1. Morning departure from Tashkent and transfer to the mountains.
  2. Instruction and preparation: how to sit in the raft, how to paddle, what to do if you fall in.
  3. Rafting on the Ugam — about 8.5 km and 40 minutes on the water, with rapids and calmer stretches in between.
  4. After rafting, a sightseeing drive around Charvak Reservoir along a scenic mountain road, with stops at viewpoints.
  5. Lunch in a local restaurant, then the return to Tashkent.

Best Time for Rafting

Our rafting tour runs from March to October. The tour description recommends spring and autumn for the ride, when the water level and current suit most rafters. In midsummer the air in the mountains is warm, which makes the day pleasant even though the river water stays cold. Ask us about conditions for your dates — the river changes from week to week.

Who Is This Adventure For?

Rafting on the Ugam suits:

  • beginners who want a first, guided rafting experience;
  • intermediate rafters looking for a short, lively river day;
  • groups of friends and families with older children;
  • travellers who want to see the mountains of the Tashkent region.

The rafting itself is short, so the day is not exhausting. Tell us in advance about children's ages, health conditions and anyone who cannot swim, so that the instructors can plan accordingly.

Safety & Preparation

Every trip begins with a safety briefing from the instructors, and they hand out the rafting equipment — normally a life jacket, a helmet and a paddle. Listen carefully and follow the instructions in the raft; the instructor sets the rhythm and calls the commands. Basic fitness is enough. Rafting is an outdoor sport on cold, moving water, so it always carries some risk: do not join after drinking alcohol, and tell us about any medical conditions beforehand.

What to Bring

  • quick-drying clothes or sportswear (no cotton if it is cool);
  • shoes that can get wet and stay on your feet, such as sandals with straps;
  • a full change of clothes and a towel for after the rafting;
  • sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses with a strap;
  • a small dry bag for your phone, or leave valuables in the car;
  • a warm layer for the drive back — mountain evenings can be cool.

Nature & Wildlife

The Ugam valley lies in the mountains of the Ugam-Chatkal National Park, one of the largest protected areas in Uzbekistan. The park is home to brown bears, wolves, wild boars, mountain goats and many birds, although on a rafting day you will mostly see the river, the forested banks and the ridges above. After rafting, the drive around Charvak Reservoir shows the wider landscape, with turquoise water against the mountains.

Plan it with TravelBliss

See the Rafting on the Ugam River tour page for details. If you prefer a calmer mountain day, see our Tashkent Mountain Tour or the Chimgan and Charvak guide.
