In this guide
The Aral Sea lies in the far north-west of Uzbekistan, in the autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan, and Nukus is the town every Aral Sea tour starts from. In two days you can see the rusting ships of Moynaq, drive off-road to what is left of the sea, sleep in a yurt camp on the old shore and return to Nukus the next evening. This guide covers the route, the overnight, the best season and what to pack.
Key facts
- Start and finish: Nukus, capital of Karakalpakstan; hotel pickup in the morning, usually between 08:00 and 09:00 (tour data).
- Route: Nukus – Moynaq (ship graveyard and museum) – Ustyurt Plateau – Aral Sea shore – Sudochie Lake – Nukus.
- Time needed: 2 days, 1 night in a yurt camp near the sea.
- Transport: private 4WD vehicle with driver; much of the second half of day 1 is off-road.
- Season: the tour runs from March to November.
- Good for: travellers interested in the environment, photographers, anyone who wants to see the sea itself and not only the ships.
- Prices: depend on group size and season — see the 2-Day Aral Sea tour page or contact us.
Getting to Nukus
Most visitors fly from Tashkent to Nukus (domestic flights take about 1 h 40 min; check current schedules), or come by road from Khiva and Urgench after visiting Khorezm. Plan to arrive the day before the tour: the drive leaves early, and a free afternoon in Nukus lets you visit the Savitsky Museum (the State Museum of Arts of Karakalpakstan), famous for its Russian avant-garde collection and Karakalpak folk art. If you are combining the Aral Sea with Khiva, a walk through Khiva's old town and a day among the desert fortresses of ancient Khorezm fit well before or after.
The 2-day Aral Sea route from Nukus
Day 1: Nukus – Moynaq – Ustyurt Plateau – Aral Sea
You leave Nukus in the morning by 4WD and drive north to Moynaq (also written Muynak), once a fishing port on the Aral Sea. Here you visit the ship graveyard, where Soviet-era fishing boats sit on sand, and the local museum with photographs and paintings of the town when the water still reached it. Our separate guide to the Moynaq ship cemetery tells the story of the town in detail.
After lunch in Moynaq the road ends and the off-road part begins. You cross the edge of the Ustyurt Plateau, a vast, flat limestone tableland with long views over the dried seabed. You reach the Aral Sea area in the late afternoon, in time for sunset over the former seabed, then dinner and the night in a yurt camp.
Day 2: Aral Sea – Sudochie Lake – Nukus
Get up early for sunrise near the water — the light over the salt flats is the reason many photographers make this trip. After breakfast at the camp you drive towards Sudochie Lake, a remote wetland known as a stop for migratory birds, with scenic stops on the way and a picnic lunch in nature. You return to Nukus in the evening, with drop-off at your hotel or an agreed meeting point.
Two days or one?
A one-day Ship Cemetery tour from Nukus shows you Moynaq, the ships and the museum and brings you back the same evening. It does not reach the sea. The two-day trip is the only way to stand on today's shore of the Aral, see the Ustyurt Plateau and spend a night in the desert. If the ecology is your main interest, read why the Aral Sea shrank before you go — it makes the long drive far more meaningful.
Overnight in a yurt camp
The night is spent in a traditional yurt camp near the Aral Sea. Expect a simple, atmospheric stay: felt yurts, shared facilities and home-style food, not a hotel. According to the tour programme, lunch and dinner are served on day 1 and breakfast and lunch on day 2. Nights in the desert are much cooler than the days, even in summer, and the sky is very dark — clear nights are good for stars.
When to go
The tour runs from March to November. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable months for the long drive: days are mild and the light is soft. Summer days in Karakalpakstan are very hot and dry, so start early and protect yourself from the sun. Winter is not offered: the region is cold and windy and the off-road tracks are harder.
Practical tips
- Pack a sun hat, sunglasses, long-sleeved tops and sports shoes in summer; in other seasons bring layers for cold mornings and evenings.
- Bring your own toothbrush, toothpaste and sun cream for the camp night, plus a small torch.
- Carry some cash in small notes for snacks, souvenirs and tips; do not count on paying by card in Moynaq or at the camp.
- Keep your passport with you on both days, not in the main luggage.
- The off-road section is bumpy and dusty; protect cameras with a bag and tell us in advance about back problems or car sickness.
- Drink plenty of water — the air is dry and the dust is salty.
