In this guide
If you are in Bukhara and want to reach the Nuratau Mountains, the three-day homestay route is the most practical way to do it: it leaves Bukhara in the morning, spends two nights in mountain villages and ends in Samarkand, so it also covers your onward journey. This guide focuses on logistics — the road, the timing, where you stop and what to sort out before you go.
Key facts
- Start and finish: Bukhara (departure 09:00) to Samarkand (arrival around 13:00 on Day 3).
- Day 1 on the road (tour data): you leave Bukhara for the mountains, break the drive in Nurata and reach Hayat after some 220 km.
- Nights: Hayat village homestay, then Asraf village homestay.
- Walking: one guided hike, Hayat to Asraf, about 12 km and roughly 4 hours.
- Stops on the way: Nurata — fortress ruins, a suzani embroidery workshop, the Chashma mosque and spring.
- Good for: travellers heading from Bukhara to Samarkand who can spare an extra day or two.
- Prices: depend on group size and season — see the tour page or contact us.
The route from Bukhara
From Bukhara the road heads north-east across the irrigated oasis and then into the dry plains at the edge of the Kyzylkum. Gijduvan, a town known for its glazed ceramics, lies north-east of Bukhara on this side of the oasis; on our 2-day homestay route a pottery workshop there is a fixed stop, and on the 3-day trip you can ask us whether a short visit fits the day. About three hours after leaving Bukhara you reach Nurata, a small town at the foot of the range, and from there the road turns into the mountains towards Hayat.
Day 1: Bukhara – Nurata – Hayat
09:00 Leave Bukhara
You leave Bukhara by car with your driver. Keep water, a hat and cash within reach; the main luggage travels in the car.
12:00 Stop in Nurata
Nurata is the one town stop of the trip, and it is worth the hour:
- The fortress ruins on the hill above the town are traditionally linked to Alexander the Great, whose army passed through the region in the 4th century BC.
- The Chashma complex is built around a spring whose pool is full of fish that local people consider sacred; a mosque stands beside it, and pilgrims come from across the region.
- A suzani workshop shows how the large embroidered hangings typical of Nurata are made by hand.
13:00–15:00 On to Hayat
The road climbs into the Nuratau Mountains. You arrive in Hayat around 15:00, check in with your host family and have a late lunch.
16:30–18:00 Walk around Hayat
A short walk leads to the breeding enclosure of Severtsov's wild sheep, an endangered species, and to the ruins of an old settlement. Dinner is at 18:00 with the family.
Day 2: on foot from Hayat to Asraf
At 09:00 you set off with a guide on a hike of about 12 km to Asraf, which takes roughly four hours. The path climbs to Karul, with wide views over the Kyzylkum steppe, and passes the ruins of the old Deh fortress. You arrive in Asraf around 13:00 for lunch, walk through the village in the afternoon and have free time before dinner at 18:00. Your luggage does not walk with you — confirm with us how it reaches Asraf when you book. For more on the trail itself and the wildlife along it, see our 3-day Nuratau hiking and nature guide.
Day 3: Asraf – Samarkand
Breakfast is at 08:00 and you leave Asraf at 09:00. The drive to Samarkand takes about four hours, so you arrive around 13:00 — early enough to check in and see a first monument in the afternoon.
Before you go
- Book ahead so we can reserve both homestays for your dates.
- Hotels: you need a hotel in Bukhara for the night before and one in Samarkand from Day 3.
- Fitness: the Day 2 hike is the only demanding part; if walking is a problem, tell us before booking so we can discuss options.
- Other ways from Bukhara: if you prefer horses to hiking, the Nuratau horse riding trip from Bukhara takes two days and also ends in Samarkand.
Practical tips
- Pack a small daypack for the hike and a separate overnight bag for the two homestays.
- Bring cash for the suzani workshop and small purchases — village homes do not take cards.
- Wear walking shoes from Day 1; the walk in Hayat starts soon after you arrive.
- Carry a warm layer: evenings in the mountains are cooler than in Bukhara.
- Download offline maps and entertainment before leaving Bukhara; mobile signal is weak in places.
- If you get car-sick, take a front seat for the mountain roads.
