Bukhara and Samarkand from Tashkent: 2-Day Train Tour

If you are based in Tashkent and have only two days, the high-speed train makes it possible to see both Samarkand and Bukhara and be back in the capital on the second evening. The plan is simple: Tashkent to Samarkand in the morning, a guided day in Samarkand, an evening train to Bukhara, a morning in Bukhara's old town and an afternoon train home. This guide shows how the two days work and what you can realistically see.

Why two days by train works

Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara lie on one railway line, and the Afrosiyob high-speed train links them several times a day. By train you spend about eight hours in total on board and the rest of the time in the cities. The order matters: you see Samarkand by day, sleep in Bukhara and take the long leg back to Tashkent in one go on the second afternoon. Day 1: Tashkent – Samarkand – Bukhara

Morning train to Samarkand

The day starts with an early transfer to the station in Tashkent and a morning high-speed train. Several Afrosiyob trains leave Tashkent between about 6 and 9 am and reach Samarkand a little over two hours later, so you can begin sightseeing in the middle of the morning.

A guided day in Samarkand

Your guide meets you in Samarkand. A full day covers the city's main monuments: the Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, where Amir Timur is buried; Registan Square with its three madrasas; the Bibi-Khanym Mosque; the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis with its street of tiled mausoleums; the Ulugh Beg Observatory; and the Siyob Bazaar, where you can buy Samarkand bread and dried fruit for the journey.

Evening train to Bukhara

In the evening you take a high-speed train on to Bukhara, which is about 1.5 to 2 hours further west. You are met at the station and taken to your hotel; on our tour you stay in a boutique hotel in Bukhara. If you still have energy, an evening stroll in the old town is a calm start to day two.

Day 2: Bukhara – Tashkent

A morning in the old town

After breakfast at the hotel you walk through Bukhara's compact historic centre with a guide: the Lyabi-Hauz ensemble around its pool, the Magoki Attori Mosque, the domed trading bazaars, the Poi Kalon complex with the Kalon Minaret and Mosque, and the walls of the Ark fortress, which on this short programme you see from the outside. Bukhara is a walking city, and in one morning you get a good feel for it.

Afternoon train to Tashkent

In the afternoon you board the high-speed train back to Tashkent. The direct run takes about four hours, so you arrive in the evening and are taken to your hotel.

Is two days enough?

Two days are enough to see the highlights and understand why these cities are so famous, but the pace is brisk. You will not have time for museums, a second visit to Registan at sunset or a long lunch in Bukhara. Practical tips

• Travel light: on day one you carry your bag from Tashkent to Bukhara; a cabin-size case or a backpack is easiest.
• Book the trains first: all three legs must line up; if one is sold out, we plan around it with the Sharq train or a car.
• Bring passports: every traveller needs a passport for each train and for the hotel check-in in Bukhara.
• Wear comfortable shoes: both days involve several kilometres on foot on stone and brick paving.
• Dress for the sites: cover shoulders and knees for mausoleums and mosques.
• Eat on the move: there is a café car on the Afrosiyob, but a picnic of Samarkand bread and fruit from Siyob Bazaar works well for the evening train.
